DIS(ORIENT)

ABOUT THE PROJECT

An immersive journey exploring how we navigate

the world, designed to reconnect us with our bodies

CONCEPT

CONCEPT

CONCEPT

Dis(Orient) is an immersive digital experience that explores how humans navigate and orient themselves in unfamiliar environments by reconnecting with the body’s internal sense of movement and space. Drawing from the concept of proprioception—our innate ability to sense our body’s position and movement—the project investigates what happens when orientation breaks down and how we rebuild it.

The experience is structured in four phases: Orientation, simulating the initial mapping of a new space; Disorientation, which uses chaotic visuals, shifting light, and sound to disrupt spatial perception; Re-orientation, employing geometric guides to reset internal navigation; and Grounding, a calming phase that restores bodily awareness and a sense of safety.

Dis(Orient) ultimately reflects on the embodied process of finding one’s feet—both literally and metaphorically—in new surroundings, framing disorientation not just as confusion but as a pathway to deeper bodily and spatial awareness.

DOCUMENTATION

The research behind Dis(Orient) explores how sound and visuals shape spatial perception, bodily awareness, and emotional orientation.

Through an iterative artistic process, we experimented with abstract visual systems, flashing lights, and contrasting states of order versus disorder and rhythm versus non-rhythm to evoke different perceptual conditions. Sound was treated as both a spatial and emotional guide, while visuals reacted through shifts in structure, intensity, and movement—oscillating between control and chaos.

This audiovisual exploration investigates how disorientation can be deliberately designed as an embodied experience, allowing perception to destabilize and gradually re-organize through sensory cues.

FEBRUARY, 25TH, 2024

Alte Münze, BERLIN

A 2-day event organized by TimeLab, featuring a series of talks, performances, and an exhibition that highlights new media projects and installations by upcoming artists and media researchers.

Our installation was adapted to one of the biggest LED screen we ever worked with: 22m of width and 5m of height. We were opening the AV performances on the last day of the festival.
